Megalania (Varanus priscus) is an extinct very large goanna or monitor lizard which was part of a megafaunal assemblage that inhabited southern Australia during the Pleistocene epoch, about 2.5 million years ago. This massive reptile was about 23 feet (7 meters) long, the size of a Saltwater Crocodile, the largest reptile alive today, making it the largest lizard of all time. This colossal lizard also had a venomous bite with toxic bacteria in its spit to kill other animals by biting them, just like its closest relative, the Komodo Dragon. The Megalania seem to have disappeared between 40,000 and 30,000 years ago. The first aboriginal settlers of Australia might have encountered them.
